It was once the pride and joy of a young king. Now it is little more than a sorry wreck: its colours faded, its headlights and grilles gone, the bodywork held together by a crude tow rope. Ivan Mahy bought this battered Aston Martin some 50 years ago from a garage owner in Gembloux. The man was having a major clear-out and wanted to get rid of the DB2. Even so, he wanted 13,000 francs for it: the aluminium coachwork was worth that alone. True, there was something not quite right about the chassis number, and the engine and gearbox under the bonnet were both Triumph replacements. A shame for a collector, perhaps, but not for the original owner: the new six-cylinder Aston Martin engine had always had a bad reputation. The DB2 was also impractical in other ways. For example, the luggage space behind the seats could only be reached from inside the car. As a result, this British make was not so much in demand back then as it is today. James Bond and his silver-coloured DB5 (complete with ejector seat!) were not yet the screen heroes they would later become. However, this purchase turned out to have a unique silver lining. The registration certificate of the drophead led Mahy to the Royal Palace in Brussels. An inquiry at the Aston Martin Club brought confirmation that King Baudoin, who had been on the throne for just two years and was known to be mad about fast cars, had bought this DB2 at the Brussels Car Show in 1953. It was one of just 411 cars of this model that Aston Martin made, of which 102 were dropheads. However, the king hardly ever used the car. Driving anonymously along Belgian roads in an eye-catching convertible when you are the crowned head of state is not really possible! The Aston Martin was sold and the new owner crashed it into oblivion. The bonnet and the front wings were completely torn away from the chassis – which explains how a royal sports car eventually found its way to a muddy yard in Gembloux.
In 1955, King Baudoin bought a new Aston Martin: a DB2/4 with a roof. This car, fully restored, was sold at auction in 2020 for 271,000 euros.

Jadis bolide reluisant aux mains d’un jeune roi, l’Aston Martin DB 2 a aujourd’hui l’air triste et maussade : un rouge délavé sans vie, sans ses phares, sans sa calandre altière, étranglée par un banal câble de remorque. Ivan Mahy a acheté cette britannique accidentée il y a cinquante ans. Quand un garagiste de Gembloux, en Wallonie, liquide son stock, il demande quand même 13 000 bef pour son Aston Martin. Une somme considérable parce que la carrosserie est entièrement en précieux aluminium. Mais quelque chose cloche pour le numéro de série et le capot stylisé abrite un moteur et une boîte de vitesses de Triumph. Dommage pour le collectionneur, mais une chance pour le conducteur, car le moteur 6 cylindres flambant neuf d’Aston Martin a eu une mauvaise réputation à l’époque. L’espace bagages derrière les sièges est peu pratique aussi puisqu’il n’est accessible qu’en passant par l’intérieur du cabriolet. Il est vrai que la marque britannique ne fait pas encore un tel objet de désir : James Bond et sa DB 5 argentée avec siège éjectable ne sont pas encore des héros de grand écran et, dans les livres de Ian Fleming, l’espion conduit en fait une imposante Bentley. La carte grise du cabriolet met Mahy sur la piste du Palais royal à Bruxelles, piste confirmée par une brève enquête auprès de l’Aston Martin Club. Après même pas deux ans sur le trône, le roi Baudouin, qui adorait les voitures rapides, a acheté cette voiture de sport au Salon de l’Auto au Heysel à Bruxelles en 1953. C’est un des 411 exemplaires seulement qu’Aston Martin a construits de ce modèle, dont 102 cabriolets. Cependant, le souverain a rarement conduit ce bolide, car, pour un roi, il n’est pas évident de faire, ni vu ni connu, la course en cabriolet sur les routes belges. L’Aston Martin est donc vendue et le nouveau propriétaire la conduit à sa « perte totale ». Le capot du moteur et les ailes avant ont été complètement arrachés du châssis et la voiture de sport royale se retrouve donc un jour sur un terrain boueux à Gembloux. Quant au roi Baudouin, il s’est acheté une nouvelle Aston Martin en 1955, cette fois une DB 2/4 couverte. Cette dernière a été entièrement restaurée et vendue aux enchères en 2020 pour 271 000 euros.

Ooit was hij de blinkende bolide van een jonge koning, nu staat de Aston Martin DB2 er mistroostig bij: in vaal, bezonken rood, zonder koplampen, zonder trotse grille en gewurgd door een ordinair sleeptouw. Ivan Mahy kocht de geaccidenteerde Brit vijftig jaar geleden. Een garagist uit het Waalse Gembloux hield grote opruiming en voor 13.000 frank mocht de Aston Martin weg. Dat was veel geld, want de carrosserie was volledig van waardevol aluminium. Maar er spoorde iets niet met het chassisnummer en onder de gestileerde kap huisden een motor en versnellingsbak van Triumph. Dat was jammer voor de verzamelaar, maar een goede zaak voor de bestuurder, want de nochtans gloednieuwe zescilinder van Aston Martin had in die tijd een belabberde reputatie. Weinig praktisch was ook de bagageruimte achter de zetels die enkel van binnen in de cabrio bereikbaar was. Het Britse automerk was toen ook nog lang niet zo gegeerd als nu. James Bond en zijn zilverkleurige DB5 met schietstoel waren nog geen helden van het witte doek en in de boeken van Ian Fleming reed de spion met een statige Bentley. Het inschrijvingsbewijs van de cabrio leidde Mahy naar het Koninklijk Paleis in Brussel. Navraag bij de Aston Martin Club bracht de bevestiging. Boudewijn, toen net twee jaar koning en verzot op snelle wagens, had de sportwagen gekocht op het Autosalon op de Brusselse Heizel van 1953. Het was een van de slechts 411 exemplaren die Aston Martin heeft gebouwd, waarvan 102 cabriolets. Maar de vorst heeft nauwelijks met de auto gereden. Anoniem in een cabrio over Belgische wegen razen was niet vanzelfsprekend voor een koning. De Aston Martin werd verpatst en de nieuwe eigenaar ramde hem naar de verdoemenis. De motorkap en de voorste vleugels waren volledig van het chassis gerukt. Zo belandde de koninklijke sportwagen op een modderig terrein in Gembloux.
In 1955 kocht koning Boudewijn een nieuwe Aston Martin. Deze keer een DB2/4 met dak. Die werd, volledig gerestaureerd, in 2020 geveild voor 271.000 euro.
