It was out of the question that she would drive to Ghent in a hearse! An angry Chris glared furiously at her husband, Ivan Mahy. He had tricked her into this, she thought. The day – a Saturday in the early 1970s – had begun well enough. Ivan had told his wife and children to get ready for a day out at the seaside. He seemed very keen to get there. Chris had even had to tell him to slow down as their tiny Fiat 127 sped towards the coast. However, the visit to the beach turned out to be a short one. There was no ice-cream and no go-cart ride along the promenade (as the kids had been hoping). In fact, within an hour they were all back inside the car and heading for Brussels, where Ivan had an appointment. But first he would drop Chris off in Eeklo, where an American car was awaiting collection. He told her it was a Cadillac automatic, which was no problem. What he failed to tell her was that the car was actually a jet-black hearse, complete with ornaments and a shining silver crucifix on the roof! It was a super-silent Sixty Special with Fleetwood coachwork from 1956, just three years older than the very similar Cadillac that was transformed into Ecto-1 in the film Ghostbusters. After a heated exchange of words, Chris was finally persuaded to drive the black monster back to Ghent. The generous seller had already filled up the tank with enough fuel to get it to its destination, so Ivan jumped into the Fiat and took the kids home, before racing off to Brussels like he was Juan Manuel Fangio. But when he arrived back later that evening, Chris was nowhere to be seen. He immediately leapt into his car again and set off along the road to Eeklo. After a dozen or so kilometres he found her sitting at the side of the road. The gas-guzzling V8 had run out of petrol! And because she had left her handbag in the Fiat, there was no point in her trying to find a telephone or a garage: she had no money! To say that she was not amused is the understatement of the century. Today, more than 50 years later, her children still refer to the Cadillac as ‘mum’s hearse’.

Conduire un corbillard ? À Gand ? C’est hors de question. Chris gratifie son époux, Ivan Mahy, d’un regard furibond. Il l’a simplement roulée, estime-t-elle. Pourtant, ce samedi du début des années 1970 avait bien commencé. À l’aube, Ivan avait mobilisé femme et enfants car il prévoyait de partir dans la demi-heure à la mer. En cours de route, Chris doit même conseiller à son mari de ménager un peu l’accélérateur de la petite Fiat 127. Mais l’excursion à la côte est de courte durée. Même pas une glace ni un tour en kart comme l’avaient espéré les enfants. Au bout d’une heure à peine, tout le monde se retrouve en voiture. Ivan dit avoir encore un rendez-vous à Bruxelles. En cours de route, il veut déposer Chris à Eeklo où attend une limousine américaine. Une Cadillac mise au rancart, munie d’une boîte de vitesses automatique, Chris pourrait se débrouiller avec. Seulement, Ivan ne lui a pas raconté qu’il s’agit d’un corbillard noir comme geai, avec encore tous ses ornements et l’imposante croix argentée sur le toit. Une Sixty Special de 1956, silencieuse, avec une carrosserie de Fleetwood, et de trois ans l’aînée de la Cadillac très ressemblante, rebaptisée Ecto-1 dans le film Ghostbusters. Non sans une dispute très animée, Chris accepte finalement de conduire le corbillard à Gand. Le généreux donateur a même pourvu la Cadillac de suffisamment d’essence pour atteindre sa destination. Ivan monte à bord de sa Fiat et part en toute hâte à Gand pour y déposer les enfants avant de pousser jusqu’à Bruxelles. Installés sur la banquette arrière, les enfants se retournèrent pour saluer leur maman, tandis que leur père démarre sur les chapeaux de roue comme s’il était Juan Manuel Fangio. En rentrant ce soir-là, Ivan ne trouve pas trace de son épouse. Il remonte en voiture et refait à l’inverse le trajet vers Eeklo, inspectant les abords de la route à la recherche de Chris. Il la découvre en effet, abandonnée sur le bas-côté. La V8 pas très économique a eu encore plus soif que prévu et était tombée en panne sèche. Chris n’avait même pas pu partir à la recherche d’une station-service parce que son sac était resté dans la Fiat. Elle était furax. Près d’un demi-siècle plus tard, la Cadillac est encore toujours connue sous l’appellation de « corbillard de maman ».

Geen denken aan dat ze met een lijkwagen naar Gent zou rijden. Woedend keek Chris naar haar man Ivan Mahy. Die had haar erin geluisd, vond ze. Nochtans was die zaterdag in de vroege jaren 1970 goed begonnen. Bij het ochtendgloren had Ivan vrouw en kinderen opgetrommeld, want over een halfuur zouden ze vertrekken naar zee. Onderweg moest Chris haar man zelfs aanmanen om het gaspedaal van de kleine Fiat 127 minder driftig in te drukken. Maar de uitstap naar de kust was van korte duur. Geen ijsje en een ritje in een gocart, zoals de kinderen hadden gehoopt, maar na een uur alweer de auto in. Ivan had nog een afspraak in Brussel. Hij zou Chris in Eeklo droppen, want daar wachtte een Amerikaanse slee. Een afgedankte Cadillac met een automatische versnellingsbak, daarmee kon Chris wel overweg. Ivan had er niet bij verteld dat de Cadillac een gitzwarte lijkwagen was, een corbillard met de ornamenten en het imposante zilveren kruis nog op het dak. Het was een geruisloos glijdende Sixty Special uit 1956, met een koetswerk van Fleetwood en drie jaar ouder dan de sterk gelijkende, tot Ecto-1 omgedoopte Cadillac uit de film Ghostbusters. Na een felle woordenwisseling ging Chris uiteindelijk akkoord om de corbillard naar Gent te rijden. De gulle schenker had de Cadillac van voldoende benzine voorzien om de bestemming te halen. Ivan stapte in zijn Fiat en vertrok spoorslags naar Gent om de kinderen thuis af te zetten en daarna naar Brussel te rijden. Vanop de achterbank zwaaiden de kinderen nog even naar hun moeder, terwijl vader wild optrok als was hij Juan Manuel Fangio. Toen Ivan die avond thuiskwam, was Chris nergens te bespeuren. Hij sprong weer in de auto en reed over de steenweg naar Eeklo, speurend naar zijn vrouw. Daar stond ze, moederziel alleen in de berm. De niet zo zuinige V8 was toch zonder benzine gevallen. Chris kon niet eens op zoek naar een tankstation, want haar handtas was in de Fiat achtergebleven. Ziedend was ze. De Cadillac staat bijna een halve eeuw later nog altijd bekend als de ‘corbillard van moeder’.
